Abandoned 35,016-Seat Premier League Stadium Demolished for Apartment Complex, Leaving Behind Only a Commemorative Statue

The vestiges of Upton Park now comprise a residential project, a prominent statue, and over a century’s worth of cherished moments.

West Ham honored their illustrious 102-year history at the Boleyn Ground before relocating in 2016.

The Hammers said a touching goodbye to their esteemed stadium after securing a 3-2 win against Manchester United in May 2016.

Since then, they have carried on their football journey a short distance away in Stratford, primarily leaving behind their previous community.

A section of Upton Park was demolished for the 2018 film Final Score, starring Pierce Brosnan and Dave Bautista.

The site was ultimately entirely cleared to make room for 842 new apartments.

SunSport reported last year that the legacy of the venue and its community impact is honored, with the residential development showcasing a “bubbles” theme inspired by the club’s famous chant “Forever Blowing Bubbles.”

The Upton Gardens project offers a range of property options, beginning at £350,000 for a one-bedroom flat and around £500k for a two-bedroom maisonette.

The exit of West Ham has profoundly influenced the local community.

Nathan’s Pie and Eels, a renowned matchday establishment, closed permanently in 2018, just two years after West Ham’s departure.

Many local businesses have also closed or faced challenges to stay afloat.

On the intersection of Green Street and Barking Road, there stands a remarkable statue of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, and Ray Wilson, proudly holding the World Cup trophy.

After relocating to Stratford, West Ham expressed interest in moving the statue as well.

Nevertheless, Newham Council decided to support fans who wanted it to remain in its original position.

As reported by The Athletic, many dedicated West Ham supporters continue to visit The Boleyn Tavern on match days, which is a 40-minute public transport ride from the London Stadium.

With the forthcoming Premier League match against Arsenal approaching, one fan noted: “I’d prefer to spend my money here to support the pub.”

“Consider how many patrons they’ve lost over the years. West Ham’s departure has had a significant impact on the area.

“When I’m asked if West Ham is home this week, I respond, ‘No, they’re playing away in Stratford.’ We no longer have a home stadium.

“The vibe at the London Stadium is dismal, and opposing fans overshadow us week after week.”

Since leaving Upton Park, West Ham has reached notable milestones, including triumphing in the Europa Conference League in 2023.

Nevertheless, many supporters still voice feelings of disconnection with their current venue.

Ultimately, a significant aspect of the club’s history will always be tied to E13, where 842 apartments now overshadow over a century of legacy.
