Cape Town Reinforces Its Status as a Leading Global Filmmaking Center with R900 Million Studio Investment

A major property transaction has been completed for a section of a City-owned site in Paardevlei, Somerset West, paving the way for an impressive R900-million film studio endeavor led by Cape Point Film Studios (CPFS).

The agreement was concluded after a site inspection conducted by Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayco Member responsible for Economic Growth.

This innovative project seeks to turn the area into a state-of-the-art film facility, bolstering the city’s status as a global filmmaking center.

Job Creation

CPFS plans to refurbish existing buildings to develop a modern studio complex that meets international standards.

Future plans also envision a specialized sea and underwater sound stage area, providing unique opportunities for filmmakers.

“We are grateful to the City of Cape Town for collaborating with us on this venture, as we, being industry professionals, understand how quickly the content and film sectors are changing,” expressed CPFS director Henry F Herring.

“The need for more strategic initiatives, such as top-notch sound stages, to foster this growth not only assists filmmakers in narrating their stories but also plays a crucial role in the sustainable development of the film industry, which boasts a 1:4 multiplier effect on its value chain, thus generating additional jobs.”

A Destination for Local and International Productions

In the meantime, Vos highlighted the project’s potential to revitalize Cape Town’s creative economy.

As per the latest data from the South African Cultural Observatory mapping study, the cultural and creative sectors contributed R161 billion to the country’s GDP.

“This lease is set to create hundreds of jobs, infuse nearly R1 billion into the local economy, and boost tourism in Cape Town,” Vos stated.

“The creative economy stands as one of the top-performing sectors within the city.”

How Cape Town Plans to Make Its Hiking Trails SAFER This Summer

In related news, the City of Cape Town (CoCT) is rolling out enhanced security measures to better protect residents and visitors during the busy season.

Cape Town is renowned for its stunning mountain hikes in the surrounding areas. However, a surge in foot traffic has recently led to an increase in opportunistic crime.

Last summer, SANParks faced a series of robberies and muggings at various hotspots within the Table Mountain National Park.

As part of its preparations for the holiday season, the CoCT is enhancing security at popular tourist spots, including hiking trails, historic districts, and the central business district.
