Professor Tawana Kupe’s New Book ‘Higher Education and SDG4’: A Critical Analysis of the Steps Needed to Achieve Quality Education

Johannesburg – Professor Tawana Kupe, a Global Higher Education Strategy Adviser and the former Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria, has assumed the role of editor for a new publication titled “Higher Education and SDG4.”

Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations, SDG4 is particularly crucial for Higher Education institutions.

“Taking a proactive approach, Higher Education and SDG4 explores the changing educational landscape, highlighting its vital contributions along with the necessary steps to achieve ‘Quality Education’,” asserts the International Association of Universities (IAU), the worldwide representative for higher education.

“We at the IAU are thrilled to announce the launch of our partner and Executive Leadership Programme facilitator Prof. Tawana Kupe’s recent publication, ‘Higher Education and SDG4’.”

About the book:

The chapters investigate current challenges and issues, moving beyond simple reflection to propose innovative ideas, strategies, and potential solutions that can enable higher education to make significant contributions toward achieving SDG4.

Incorporating perspectives from students, faculty, and staff, the chapters address the complex factors that perpetuate inequity and examine how universities can proactively work to mitigate it.

Highlighting the necessity for intentional, inclusive, and urgent action, Higher Education and SDG4 broadens its scope beyond educational frameworks to investigate how higher education institutions can enhance societal capacities and act as vital agents for sustainable futures.

Higher Education and the Sustainable Development Goals is an enlightening series of 17 books, each addressing an SDG from the viewpoint of higher education.

Employing a solutions-oriented approach, each volume discusses how higher education contributes to the achievement of Agenda 2030.

This series is edited by Wendy Purcell, a Professor at Rutgers University and an Academic Research Scholar at Harvard University, as well as an Emeritus Professor and University President Emerita.
