Paul Kagame, the President of Rwanda, has revealed plans for the country to host a Formula One race.
Formula 1 has not taken place in Africa since the last South African Grand Prix in 1993.
Max Verstappen received his trophy for winning his fourth consecutive world title at a ceremony in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital.
During the event, Kagame addressed the FIA’s General Assembly, stating: “I am excited to officially declare that Rwanda is pursuing the chance to revitalize racing in Africa by hosting a Formula One Grand Prix.”
“I express my gratitude to (F1 CEO) Stefano Domenicali and the entire F1 team for the positive advancements in our discussions to date.”
“I assure you that we are embracing this opportunity with the respect and commitment it deserves.”
“Together, we can craft something we can all take pride in.”
Domenicali mentioned in August that Rwanda aspires to host a race at a permanent venue.
Reports suggest that the racetrack, to be designed by a team led by former F1 driver Alexander Wurz from Austria, will be situated near a new international airport currently being built 40 kilometers from Kigali.
Lewis Hamilton indicated in August that it is the perfect time for a return to Africa and is actively working with both Rwanda and South Africa to realize this vision.

The seven-time world champion remarked, “The timing could not be more ideal. We cannot keep adding races in other regions while overlooking Africa, a continent that is often taken advantage of without reciprocity.”
“Having a Grand Prix in Africa would truly showcase the continent’s splendor and boost tourism and various opportunities. It’s time to recognize Africa.”

This week marks the first occasion the FIA is holding its general assemblies in Africa, with FIA’s Emirati President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and Rwanda’s Sports Minister Richard Nyirihishema convening in Kigali.
Ben Sulayem commented, “Conducting our meetings in Rwanda during such a pivotal time in the FIA’s calendar emphasizes the strength of this nation and its growing impact on motorsport.”
“We share values and objectives in crucial areas such as innovation, sustainability, and road safety, and I am eager about our ongoing partnership.”
“The future of motorsport in Africa appears promising.”
Verstappen is also participating in “community service” in Rwanda following an incident at a press conference during the Singapore Grand Prix in October.
This initiative involves developing an FIA Affordable Cross Car, designed locally in Rwanda, according to specifications provided by the governing body.
