Supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have received a definitive message regarding the position of key MP Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi: he has been effectively “cancelled” regarding his influence within the party.
Julius Malema’s altered demeanor when questioned about Ndlozi highlighted the difficulties facing Winnie Madikizela-Mandela House following the exit of his former ally Floyd Shivambu and others who joined Jacob Zuma’s MK Party.
Ndlozi has faced criticism after Malema labeled Shivambu’s actions as a “betrayal,” a situation that has exacerbated tensions within the EFF.
As the conference commenced on Friday, it became clear that the rumors surrounding Ndlozi’s exclusion were indeed true.
The noticeable absence of the former EFF spokesperson at the national elective conference at Nasrec was significant, with Malema promptly shutting down media inquiries concerning Ndlozi’s status in the party.
Ndlozi’s continued silence and lack of participation in EFF events prompt speculation about whether this prominent politician will remain a part of the organization that has effectively marginalized him.
In an impassioned response on Saturday, Malema dismissed questions about Ndlozi as “nonsense” and “newspaper gossip.”
“Why focus on one individual amidst so many others present, as if he embodies the conference?” a clearly exasperated Malema challenged journalists.
“As if this [conference] won’t proceed? It’s happening, and it’s occurring without him.
“We are here to tackle political matters—not personal egos or individuals who believe they are more vital than the organization; this will once again show that the organization outweighs all of them.
“Out of principle and policy, we will not entertain any nonsense regarding Mbuyiseni Ndlozi… Ever.”
Malema’s forthright statements regarding Ndlozi’s conspicuous absence from the EFF conference signify the widening rift between the two figures.
Ndlozi is, in effect, banned and silenced.
This response illustrates Malema’s insistence on asserting his authority openly, regardless of the sentiments of Ndlozi’s supporters.
This dismissive attitude encapsulates Ndlozi’s current situation as Malema works to tighten his grip on power and address internal challenges.
Many expected that Ndlozi might follow Shivambu’s lead, given their close professional ties, but Ndlozi has since reaffirmed his commitment to the party.
Conversely, Malema’s hardline approach may not be well-received by the EFF’s supporter base, especially among those who hoped for Ndlozi’s election into the top six this weekend.
Ndlozi holds significant popularity among the red berets, particularly among younger supporters crucial to EFF’s “generational mission.”
As the EFF faces the critical challenge of retaining members disenchanted with Malema’s leadership, he has opted to reinforce his authority.
What lies ahead for Ndlozi?
Will he choose to leave the EFF, or will he remain, show his loyalty, and strive to win back Malema’s trust?
Notably, EFF MP Tebogo Mokwele, who was expelled for accepting funds from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s CR22 campaign, was readmitted to the party and successfully regained her MP position two months ago.
Ndlozi’s forthcoming decisions, should he choose to confront this impasse, will be crucial for the long-term sustainability of the EFF.
