Exploring Pep Guardiola’s Struggles: Insomnia and a Soup Diet Amidst Manchester City’s Challenges

PEP GUARDIOLA is facing difficulties as he deals with Manchester City’s recent string of defeats.

The Catalan coach has acknowledged that these challenging moments can impact various facets of his life, including his sleep patterns and eating habits.

With his children now adults and his wife Cristina back in Barcelona, Pep understands that leading a team through a rough patch can often feel isolating.

Earlier this week, he remarked: “You can be surrounded by people, but the pain of losing is something that you face alone.

“Certainly, friends provide support, but when you lie down and turn off the lights, solace is hard to come by.

“You need to confront the loss, take a day or two to reflect, and then bounce back.”

Guardiola asserts that his mentality remains largely unchanged from the spring, when his team was crowned champions for the fourth straight year.

This comes in light of a disappointing record of seven losses out of their last ten games — matching the number of defeats City endured in the preceding 105 matches until late April.

The sudden collapse of his previously dominant squad has left many puzzled.

After a match with Feyenoord last month, Guardiola appeared with visible marks on his head and a cut on his nose.

Initially, he blamed it on his nails being too long, but clarified this week that there’s more at play.

He explained: “I have a skin condition. I’ve been taking antihistamines for the last two to three years. Yes, my nails played a role in some of the issues with my nose. But there’s more to it than that.”

As he approaches his 54th birthday next month, Guardiola noted in a recent interview that he doesn’t feel energized enough to take on another managerial position after his tenure at the Etihad.

Many now question whether he possesses the necessary stamina for the rebuilding process that lies ahead at City.

A number of veteran players, who have enjoyed considerable success under him — including Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker, and Ilkay Gundogan — are nearing the end of their careers.

Having achieved nearly all of his objectives — and even more — with City, some observers are skeptical about his motivation to chase further successes.

Despite the bedlam of the last seven weeks, it’s notable that he extended his contract for an additional two years at the Etihad during this tumultuous period.

It was Guardiola who initiated contract discussions — even while dealing with four consecutive losses — and the agreement was reached within hours.

Given the recent difficulties and challenges he faces, he might be reconsidering his decision.

Nevertheless, those close to him insist he has no regrets and feels more resolute than ever in turning the season around.

Less than a month ago, he accepted the challenge, and there are no indications he has had second thoughts.

I have a skin issue. I’ve been using antihistamines for the past two to three years. Yes, my nails contributed to some issues with my nose. But the rest was because of this condition.

Pep Guardiola

Throughout the season, Pep has believed this was not the right time to pass the baton to a successor, and after three months, he remains convinced of that position.

The looming decision regarding the 130 charges of financial misconduct weighs heavily, as he has previously expressed his loyalty to the club he holds dear during tough moments.

Additionally, the Club World Cup set to take place in the USA this summer will complicate the start of the next season, which is another factor for him to consider.

Guardiola is determined to guide City through this challenging phase and remains steadfast in doing so.

Regardless, Pep anticipated this season would be difficult — partly due to the pressure from their recent achievements and the international commitments many of his players undertook during the Euro 2024.

Nonetheless, he did not expect to face such severe hardships, as injuries have further complicated the challenges at the season’s outset.

Still, he remains optimistic that with the return of key players from injury, he can restore their winning ways.

Everything that has transpired since the decline began in late October has not shaken his confidence.

He noted: “I’ve learned not to fight against your emotions or your current feelings in football.

“If I’m feeling down, I accept it, but I believe that this feeling will eventually pass. That’s my perspective.”

A victory against United in the derby on Sunday could help expedite that recovery.
