The Johannesburg Regional Court has sentenced 34-year-old Ashraf Hartley to five consecutive life terms in prison for the appalling rapes of his young relatives, aged between six and 12 years, in Bosmont, Johannesburg.
Rape Suspect Sentenced
The court determined that the sentences will be served consecutively. One of the victims disclosed Hartley’s crimes in a letter to her mother after being educated about sexual matters in school, prompting an investigation led by Sergeant Masedi.

“The accused (Hartley) was arrested and faced charges of four counts of rape and one count of compelled rape. The investigation uncovered a disturbing pattern of abuse by the defendant, who was adopted into the family at just 11 months old,” stated Mjonondwane.
Throughout his adult life, Hartley targeted his young relatives from 2008 to 2021, manipulating them into silence.
“In one case, he forced one victim to assault his sister. Additional evidence demonstrated a deliberate and calculated pattern of abuse, as Hartley misused his role of trust to exploit his younger relatives,” Mjonondwane further explained.
Impact On Victims
During the trial, the victims spoke, and a victim impact statement highlighted their significant loss of trust in those meant to protect them.

The survivors of these assaults now embark on a challenging path to restore their self-esteem and sense of worth.
Lorraine Nel, the prosecutor for the regional court, emphasized that the impact of these brutal acts extends far beyond physical injuries. The court acknowledged that the perpetrator has condemned each victim to a lifetime of trauma.

“The emotional scars are deeper, more enduring, and surpass the accounts provided in the victim impact statements,” Nel stated.
The court also noted Hartley’s utter lack of remorse. In light of the severe ruling, the NPA in Gauteng reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the issue of gender-based violence and advocating for tougher penalties for offenders.
