City of Tshwane Takes Bold Steps to Address Increasing Substation Vandalism

Pretoria – The City of Tshwane has voiced its concerns following the recent vandalism incident at the SSG Substation in Centurion, which highlights a troubling trend of increasing attacks on substations in recent weeks.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, (18 December 2024), Councillor Kholofelo Morodi, the MMC for Corporate and Shared Services overseeing Region 4, remarked: “I am deeply troubled by the rising number of vandalism incidents at various substations in recent weeks.”

The SSG Substation in Centurion was targeted by vandals on Monday, (16 December 2024).

“This episode acts as a stark reminder of the challenges we face in our quest to deliver a dependable and uninterrupted power supply to our communities,” commented MMC Morodi.

“The vandalism at the SSG Substation has resulted in significant disruptions for our residents, impacting daily activities and local businesses.”

“Acts of vandalism not only threaten the stability of our infrastructure but also impose additional strain on our resources as we work to restore services.”

“We recognize the serious repercussions that these power outages have on the lives of our residents and are committed to addressing these issues with urgency and responsibility.”

“However, we cannot tackle this problem on our own.”

MMC Morodi stressed the importance of community involvement in safeguarding public infrastructure.

“We urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities,” said MMC Morodi.

“Through collaboration, we can prevent further vandalism and ensure the protection of our vital infrastructure.”

“We also want to reassure the residents of Tshwane that we are putting robust measures in place to protect our infrastructure and minimize the chances of future incidents.”

MMC Morodi highlighted that this initiative is part of the Executive Mayor’s 100-Day Action Plan, which aims to improve security measures and enhance surveillance to deter criminal activities.

“We apologize for any inconvenience caused to residents,” she noted.

“Let us unite in our efforts to safeguard our community and uphold the principles of accountability and transparency as we strive for reliable service delivery.”
