ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development Wins Africa Sustainability Award

This article is sponsored by BIDC

The award ceremony is set to take place on the 30th of December 2024 at the Accra International Conference Center located in Accra, Ghana.

This award recognizes EBID’s outstanding dedication to sustainable practices across Africa and its initiatives aimed at fostering environmental, social, and economic advancement in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To improve access to sustainable financial resources in West Africa, the Bank has pledged over USD 1 billion towards sustainability-focused projects thus far, as part of its Strategy for 2021-25.

The Bank’s commitment to sustainable initiatives has garnered international acclaim, highlighted by the recent provision of a EUR 100 million line of credit from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to back climate-resilient and sustainable projects within the ECOWAS region.

In February 2023, EBID introduced its first Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Finance Framework, reinforcing its commitment to green financing and sustainability. This initiative was followed by the inaugural edition of the Bank’s informative series titled “The President’s Round Table” in October 2023, focusing on “Greening West Africa.” This event brought together environmental and sustainability experts from across the continent to discuss the impacts of climate change in West Africa and propose strategies for climate-oriented economic growth.

Additionally, EBID achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Development Finance Institution (DFI) to issue a Green, Social and Sustainable (GSS) Bond in the UEMOA regional financial market, the Bourse Régionale des Valeurs Mobilières (BRVM), which was oversubscribed within just 48 hours. The Bank is also approaching the completion of its accreditation process with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and has recently hosted a high-level delegation from GCF, South Korea, to discuss initiatives aimed at bolstering the Bank’s capacity to support the sub-region.

The African Sustainability Awards (ASA) provides a platform to honor individuals, organizations, businesses, NGOs, and government entities that demonstrate a profound commitment to sustainable practices.
