
Pretoria – Constance Kanatu, a distinguished nurse from Joe Morolong Hospital in Vryburg, North West, has been honored with the title of “Most Caring Nurse for 2024.”
Nurse Kanatu, an expert in Ophthalmology, was celebrated with this recognition at the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) Gala Dinner held at the Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria on Thursday night, December 19, 2024.
She received the Marilyn Lahana Caring National Award, named in memory of Marilyn Lahana, a Johannesburg nurse who sadly lost her life to the Ebola virus while courageously caring for a patient.
The Marilyn Lahana Caring Award is overseen by DENOSA.
This annual award acknowledges a nurse who exemplifies outstanding commitment and selfless devotion to patient care, as determined by their peers.
Nurse Kanatu, honored with the Marilyn Lahana Caring National Award, was given a trophy, certificate, and a cash prize of R15,000.

As an Ophthalmic Nurse, Kanatu has made a meaningful impact on patients facing eye-related challenges.
For those patients she cannot assist, Kanatu ensures they are directed to the appropriate facilities.
Nurse Majikela Dlangamandla from the Western Cape secured second place, receiving a trophy, certificate, and R7,500 in prize money.
Third place went to Nurse Mampe Konyama from the Free State, who was awarded a trophy, certificate, and R5,000 in prize money.
DENOSA extended its congratulations to all the award recipients, expressing pride in all the winners and stating: “Their hard work is enhancing the nursing profession’s image in the public eye.”
