
By midday on Christmas Day, a total of 231 newborns were celebrated across hospitals in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, marking a day filled with joy and excitement.
Gauteng Welcomes 184 Newborns
In Gauteng, hospitals reported the arrival of 184 infants—comprising 105 boys and 79 girls. Tembisa Hospital led the way with 16 deliveries. Gauteng’s MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, offered her warm congratulations to the new parents during her visits to various health facilities.

Accompanied by Deputy Home Affairs Minister Njabulo Nzuza and Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, Nkomo-Ralehoko joined in the celebrations with mothers at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital, presenting gifts and highlighting the significance of immunisation.

“Congratulations to all the families. We urge parents to ensure their babies receive immunisations on time to protect against diseases such as polio, tuberculosis, hepatitis, measles, and meningitis,” stated Nkomo-Ralehoko.
“All public clinics and community healthcare centres in the province offer immunisation at no cost,” she added.
Nzuza highlighted the necessity of immediate birth registration, saying, “Entering the national population register starts with birth registration. Without it, children may face barriers to accessing essential services. We have established home affairs offices within health facilities to ease this process.”

Zandile Mqumba, 38, was among the new mothers at Tembisa Hospital. She welcomed a healthy baby girl at 12:12 AM, marking the first delivery of Christmas Day at the hospital. She expressed her gratitude for the gifts and the opportunity for immediate birth registration, which enabled her child to receive a birth certificate right away.
This day also celebrated the official reopening of Tembisa Hospital’s renovated 60-bed female medical ward, complete with enhanced oxygen and suction points, improved ventilation, and an updated nurse call system.

KwaZulu-Natal Welcomes 47 Christmas Babies
Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal welcomed 47 new infants by midday, consisting of 21 boys and 26 girls. Premier Thami Ntuli and Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi visited Victoria Mxenge Hospital in Durban to join in the celebration with the new families.
Simelane-Mngadi noted that among the mothers were three 15-year-old girls. She congratulated them and encouraged all parents to prioritize their children’s health and well-being.
This Christmas surged with the joy of new life as hospitals across Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal worked tirelessly to provide safe deliveries and essential care for mothers and their newborns.
