Johannesburg – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has raised concerns regarding audio-visual content being shared across various social media platforms, which features one of its employees on a flight with the South African airline, FlySafair.
This regrettable incident, documented by multiple passengers, occurred on a flight from Durban to Cape Town on Boxing Day.
In a statement issued on Saturday, December 28, 2024, the SABC expressed its disappointment regarding the matter and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the SABC values of respect and integrity among its staff during all interactions.
The video features the staff member mentioning the SABC and claiming that the incident will be covered on SABC News.
“We would like to reiterate that SABC News complies with the Editorial Code and maintains its editorial independence, ensuring that all news decisions are made within the newsroom, free from any influence by non-editorial personnel,” the public broadcaster noted.
The SABC also stated it would follow appropriate channels in accordance with its internal procedures to address the conduct of the staff member.
The actions of the SABC employee have faced backlash from the African National Congress (ANC).
In a statement on Saturday, the ANC expressed its disapproval, saying it “noted with disgust and disdain the behavior of a woman aboard a domestic flight who acted in an unruly and unbecoming manner while invoking the name of the ANC to justify her actions.”
The ANC emphasized that it “categorically distances itself from such behavior, which contradicts the values and principles of our movement.”
“Regardless of her affiliation with the ANC, we strongly assert that no individual is entitled to behave in such an unacceptable manner, especially when misusing the respected name of the ANC.”
“We have initiated an investigation into her membership status.”
The SABC employee has been identified on social media as Nobuntu Nobu Mkhize, who is reported to be a brand manager at Metro FM.
