
Johannesburg – Authorities have detained six individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities in Riverlea, Langlaagte, following a gunfire exchange with law enforcement.
As reported by Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the arrests occurred on Friday, (27 December 2024).
“Unlicensed firearms and ammunition used by the suspects were seized by the police,” stated Lieutenant Colonel Masondo.
The police acted on intelligence they received about illegal mining operations taking place in Riverlea.
Members of the National Intervention Unit began a search for the suspects based on this intelligence.
“Upon arriving at the designated location, police found equipment linked to illegal mining activities,” remarked Lieutenant Colonel Masondo.
“As officers were in the process of confiscating the equipment, the suspects began firing at them, resulting in a shootout.”
The police captured two suspects who were found with two firearms: a rifle and a pistol, accompanied by loaded magazines.

Moreover, four additional suspects were taken into custody in the vicinity.
Lieutenant Colonel Masondo noted that the arrested individuals are facing multiple charges, including attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
“Ongoing investigations have shown that all suspects are illegally residing in the country,” Lieutenant Colonel Masondo further stated.
The suspects are anticipated to appear in court in the near future.
