Eskom Links Koeberg Nuclear Power Station Unit 2 to the National Grid

Cape Town – On New Year’s Eve, Eskom announced the successful synchronization of Unit 2 from the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station in Cape Town to the national grid.

Eskom highlighted that this significant milestone in the Generation Operational Recovery Plan and South Africa’s pursuit of a dependable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly energy supply was achieved on Monday, (30 December 2024).

“This achievement follows a thorough Long-Term Operation (LTO) program aimed at extending Unit 2’s lifespan by an additional 20 years,” Eskom stated in a press release available to The Bulrushes.

“The maintenance work for Unit 2 included the replacement of three steam generators, extensive inspections, and refueling efforts to ensure ongoing safe and efficient reactor performance.

“These enhancements are part of Eskom’s larger strategy to ensure the continued viability of Koeberg’s reactors, which are essential for the country’s energy security.”

With a contribution of 930MW, Unit 2 is crucial to Eskom’s goal of increasing its capacity by 2,500MW by March 2025, as the utility explained.

The National Nuclear Regulator is anticipated to reach a decision regarding the extension of Unit 2’s operational license in 2025.

This follows the successful renewal of Unit 1’s license, allowing operation until 2044.

Unit 1, which also contributes 930MW to the grid, has shown exceptional reliability since its return to service.

“Together, Units 1 and 2 will provide 1,860MW – nearly 5% of South Africa’s total electricity – playing a crucial role in alleviating load-shedding and stabilizing the grid,” the statement noted.

Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, celebrating 40 years of safe and efficient operations in 2024, is a cornerstone of Eskom’s energy framework.

“The successful completion of Unit 1’s LTO program in 2023 has set the stage for similar advancements with Unit 2, further solidifying Koeberg’s significant role in South Africa’s energy landscape,” Eskom added.

“Unit 1 has consistently exhibited outstanding performance, and Unit 2 is expected to meet or even exceed these achievements.”

The power utility emphasized that Koeberg’s sustained success underscores its critical role in meeting South Africa’s energy needs and assisting the transition to a low-carbon economy.

“Through strategic partnerships with global designers, suppliers, and industry leaders, Koeberg has become a hub for nuclear innovation,” remarked Bheki Nxumalo, the Group Executive for Generation.

“These collaborations are expected to be vital as South Africa explores advanced nuclear technologies, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

“This could position the country as a leader in cutting-edge nuclear solutions while also fostering a skilled nuclear workforce.”

Nxumalo further emphasized: “As South Africa retires some of its aging coal-fired power plants by 2030, nuclear energy is set to deliver a reliable and stable baseload power supply.

“In contrast to intermittent renewable energy sources, nuclear power provides continuous electricity production to satisfy the demands of residential and industrial consumers.

“Its ability to generate carbon-free energy also aligns with South Africa’s goals for climate improvement by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

Eskom anticipates that Koeberg’s enhanced performance will be fully realized in FY26, with Unit 2’s record of 498 consecutive days of operation and a 93% energy availability factor serving as a benchmark for future reliability.

“These achievements demonstrate Koeberg’s capability to effectively address South Africa’s energy challenges,” Eskom concluded.
