As South Africa embraces the New Year, President Cyril Ramaphosa reflected on the achievements of the Government of National Unity (GNU) while articulating his visions for the future.
“The outcomes of the May 2024 elections and the establishment of the GNU have steered South Africa into a fresh era brimming with possibilities,” Ramaphosa stated during his New Year’s speech on Tuesday.

Key achievements include strides in poverty reduction, decreasing living costs, and improving government capacity to deliver essential services.
Addressing the Energy Crisis
Ramaphosa praised the advancements made in resolving South Africa’s energy challenges, highlighting Eskom’s incorporation of Unit 2 at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station into the national grid.
With Unit 1 also operational, Koeberg is expected to meet 5% of the country’s electricity demand, aiding in the mitigation of the load-shedding crisis.
“We are committed to significant new investments in electricity generation and working towards a competitive electricity market,” remarked Ramaphosa.
Global and Regional Solidarity
The President addressed global and regional issues, reaffirming South Africa’s commitment to supporting victims of injustice.
- Middle East Conflict: “We continue to express our solidarity with the Palestinian populace,” Ramaphosa asserted, calling for an end to the hostilities and the release of hostages in Gaza.
- Mozambique Unrest: He voiced concerns about political instability in neighboring Mozambique, underscoring the need for regional cooperation.
While acknowledging progress, Ramaphosa expressed sorrow for the year’s tragedies, including the unfortunate deaths of children in Soweto and beyond due to contaminated food.

Looking ahead, he stressed the importance of collaboration to build an inclusive economy, generate jobs, and address pressing challenges such as water shortages and municipal service delivery.
“We will initiate a National Dialogue to connect South Africans in shaping a collective vision for our country’s future,” Ramaphosa declared.
Ramaphosa on Hosting the Landmark G20 Summit
He also highlighted South Africa’s upcoming role as the host of the G20 Summit in 2025, a groundbreaking achievement as it will be the first time this prestigious event takes place on African soil.

“Through our leadership at the G20, we aim to promote solidarity, equality, and sustainable development that will benefit countless individuals globally,” he noted.
As South Africa steps into 2025, Ramaphosa urged citizens to come together for a brighter future.
“Let us work in unity to ensure that this new era provides shared prosperity, equality, and growth for all,” he concluded.
This year offers South Africa a chance to reinforce its progress and forge a promising future, leveraging the momentum of the GNU and its commitments to addressing both national and global challenges.
