Expectant Mother Miriam Singh, Who Died at Westbury Clinic, Had a Significant Preexisting Condition

Johannesburg – A postmortem report has revealed that Miriam Singh, a 32-year-old expectant mother, who tragically passed away shortly after her admission to a Westbury health facility, had a “serious underlying condition.”

Singh died at the Westbury Clinic Midwifery Obstetric Unit on Sunday, December 29, 2024.

The Gauteng Department of Health, which initiated an investigation into this widely reported incident, announced on Thursday, January 2, 2025, that it has received the findings of an internal review conducted by leading specialists in obstetrics/gynaecology and surgery from Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

The department further elaborated: “The internal report confirmed that healthcare workers adhered to the correct protocols.”

“The postmortem analysis indicated that the patient suffered from a significant underlying condition that led to her rapid decline shortly after her arrival at our health facility.”

Due to doctor-patient confidentiality, the department stated it was unable to divulge more specific details regarding the patient’s medical condition.

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, residents of Westbury gathered outside the Westbury Clinic Midwifery Obstetric Unit, seeking answers from staff about the events surrounding Singh’s death. Singh’s husband noted that he had accompanied her to the medical facility.

“Today, the investigating officer from the South African Police Service presented the postmortem report to the Singh family,” the department stated.

“In light of these developments, the Gauteng Department of Health expressed disappointment over the unfounded allegations prematurely circulated on public platforms by various parties, which were not founded on clinical facts but rather on hearsay.”

“Such actions are not only irresponsible and unethical, but they also intensify the suffering experienced by the grieving family as they grapple with misinformation regarding their loved one’s condition, complicating their acceptance of clinical truths.”

“The Department extends its heartfelt condolences to the Singh family for their sudden loss and will continue to offer counseling services and support whenever the family is ready.”
