Johannesburg – The City of Ekurhuleni is currently investigating the cause of the power outage that affected the municipality last Thursday night, which includes O.R. Tambo International Airport.
On Friday, January 3, 2025, the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) reassured passengers that O.R. Tambo International Airport remains fully operational despite a brief power interruption impacting the Ekurhuleni Metro area.
ACSA reported that the power disruption occurred on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 19:20, and was caused by a trip in the municipal grid.
“The local municipality is in the process of determining the cause of the outage,” the airports company stated.
“It is important to note that ACSA is not responsible for identifying the source of the problem, as the power failure is outside of our jurisdiction.
“We want to emphasize that all crucial airport services, including terminals, airfield operations, and cargo handling, are operating without any interruptions.”
According to ACSA, the airport’s backup generators kicked in within 15 seconds of the outage, ensuring that operations at the airport continued without impact.
“All generators have been successfully tested and are fully functional,” confirmed ACSA.
“Cargo operations are running smoothly, with backup power systems ready to prevent any delays or disruptions.
“ACSA is closely monitoring the developments and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
“Passengers are encouraged to stay connected with their airlines for any potential changes to flight schedules.”
For real-time flight updates, passengers can also download the ACSA Mobile App.
“We appreciate our passengers for their understanding and patience during this time,” stated ACSA.
