Cape Town – The Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC), Fikile Mbalula, has declared that disciplinary action will be initiated against prominent party members Tony Yengeni and Obed Bapela due to comments that harm the party’s image.
During a press conference on Monday, January 6, 2025, in anticipation of the forthcoming “ANC January 8 statement” commemoration, Mbalula addressed Yengeni’s recent remarks that went against the ANC’s established positions.
In response to Yengeni’s critical commentary regarding the ANC and the Government of National Unity, Mbalula remarked: “Tony Yengeni is simply a political Casanova.”
He added: “He is spreading unclear political views that resonate with a limited group of dissenters who oppose the ANC.
“He will face charges… This has been communicated to him through SMS… I have contacted him… we will move forward with the charges… and he will be subjected to the ANC’s disciplinary procedures.”
The ANC Secretary General pointed out that Yengeni’s posts on social media contradict the party’s position and lend support to the uMkhonto weSizwe Party.
Mbalula issued a warning to other ANC officials who engage in derogatory comments about the party’s leadership on social media.
“They will also face consequences soon,” he cautioned.
Mbalula also announced that Bapela will be charged concerning his actions during a visit to Morocco, which contradicted ANC policies.
“Discipline is essential,” Mbalula stressed.
The ANC January 8 statement will be presented by President Cyril Ramaphosa in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on Saturday, January 11, 2025.
