Pretoria – The City of Tshwane has announced that it is “currently evaluating” the directive from the SA Local Government Bargaining Council (SALGBC) concerning the reinstatement of five senior employees who were suspended due to their involvement in a dubious tender related to the upgrading of the Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Plant.
This facility serves as an essential purification site, responsible for processing sewage water and providing it to households in Hammanskraal.
The tender, awarded in 2019 to NJR Projects and Blackhead Consulting, has been terminated due to inadequate performance.
The SALGBC has ordered that the suspended employees must return to work on January 20.
Furthermore, the bargaining council has ruled that these employees are entitled to compensation for two months’ salary due to the unfair nature of their suspension.
“These employees have been on full pay suspension since last year. The city is presently assessing the arbitration award and its implications,” stated City of Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba in a statement issued on Monday, January 6, 2025.
“Additionally, the city intends to consult with a senior legal advisor for counsel on the forthcoming steps.”
Bokaba indicated that the City of Tshwane had submitted an application to the Labour Court last year to review the conclusions and penalties imposed by the chairperson of the disciplinary hearing.
“This matter is still pending in court, and the city has requested the court to expedite the review process,” Bokaba noted.
He further stressed that the City of Tshwane would refrain from providing any more commentary on this matter, as it relates to human resource procedures and is sub judice.
