Lehlohonolo Seema, the head coach of Sekhukhune United, has shed light on Sipho Mbule’s unexpected absence from the squad that took on Polokwane City during the Limpopo derby at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium this past Sunday.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with both sides finding the back of the net: Raymond Daniels scored his first goal for Rise and Shine in the 35th minute, shortly followed by Tresor Tshibwabwa equalizing for the visitors just six minutes later.
The 26-year-old midfielder was loaned to Babina Noko from reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the beginning of the season, seeking more playing opportunities after struggling for a consistent starting spot at Chloorkop.
Since joining, Mbule has featured in seven matches under Seema’s guidance, scoring one goal. However, his absence in the derby prompted the Sekhukhune coach to clarify the reasons for his exclusion from the lineup.
“I need to rotate my squad and enhance team dynamics. Reviewing my schedule, it’s clear that some players need rest, especially since [Sipho] Mbule hasn’t enjoyed regular playing time at his previous club,” Seema explained.
“Additionally, we gave [Katlego] Otladisa his debut, and [Andy] Boyeli is also in the mix. We’re working on getting [Chibuike] Ohizu some playing time since he has been out for a while. Our aim is to rotate players and ensure everyone has a chance when possible.
“The upcoming months of January and February will present a demanding schedule, so we’re diligently managing our players. If anyone picks up a minor injury, we prefer to be cautious and heed the medical team’s advice rather than take unnecessary risks.
“To address your question, both Mbule and Boyeli were present but managing minor injuries, so we thought it best to keep them out as a precaution,” the former Orlando Pirates captain remarked.
Seema, who is in his second spell at the club, also tackled the matter of long-term injuries, emphasizing that all players must compete for their positions in the competitive selection process.
“We are dedicated to building a strong team, and the players know they need to compete. Both [Keletso] Sifama and [Jamie] Webber remain integral to Sekhukhune United and are still registered with us,” the Lesotho-born manager emphasized.
“Players must fight for their places. Some, like [Njabulo] Ngcobo, are sidelined due to injuries, but there are others keen to showcase their abilities.
“We are fortunate to have a versatile squad that provides us with several selection choices. Players are chosen based on merit, and now everyone understands that they must exert themselves to be selected.”
Sekhukhune United currently occupies the fourth spot in the Betway Premiership standings and will be back in action against AmaZulu at King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday. Babina Noko last claimed a league victory over Usuthu back in October 2021.
