Pretoria – The City of Tshwane has declared that its Emergency Services Department is presently “on high alert” due to concerns over the potential adverse effects of the ongoing rainfall.
In a statement issued to The Bulrushes on Tuesday, (7 January 2025), officials from the City of Tshwane noted that the rains were causing disturbances within “our communities.”
On Monday, (6 January 2025), the South African Weather Service (SAWS) released a Yellow Level 4 alert.
SAWS predicted disruptive rainfall for today, Tuesday, (7 January 2025).
The weather forecast indicates that the rain will persist until Wednesday, (8 January 2025).
The Tshwane Emergency Services Department is advising local communities to remain vigilant during these severe weather conditions.
The potential impacts of disruptive rainfall may include:
- An elevated risk of localized flooding, especially in vulnerable low-lying areas, informal settlements, and susceptible roads.
- The potential for mudslides, rockfalls, and soil erosion, further jeopardizing residents’ safety.
- Traffic interruptions on major routes due to flooding.
- Minor to significant vehicular accidents caused by poor visibility and slippery roads.
- Localized service disruptions from power outages and damage to infrastructure.
- Inaccessibility of certain neighborhoods due to being cut off.
- A risk to life from swiftly flowing streams and rivers.
The City of Tshwane recommends that communities follow these safety measures:
- If possible, stay indoors and avoid metal objects that can attract lightning. Avoid outdoor activities such as fishing or golfing during rain, as fishing rods and golf clubs can attract lightning.
- Do not seek refuge under isolated trees or tall structures in a thunderstorm.
- Refrain from crossing flooded low-lying streets, bridges, and swollen streams.
The Tshwane Emergency Services Department will continue to monitor weather updates and remain alert for any related emergencies.
“Residents are strongly urged to stay informed and watch for short-term weather forecasts, including any warnings or alerts from the SAWS and other reliable sources, and to promptly follow the recommended safety measures,” remarked the Tshwane Emergency Services Department.
“We also encourage residents to be vigilant and report any fire or rescue incidents immediately by calling 107 toll-free or at 012 358 6300/6400.
“When reporting an emergency, please stay calm, speak clearly, know your location, and provide the correct address and your contact number, so the operator can return your call if necessary.”
