Fans are stunned to learn that Michael van Gerwen has been substituted by Peter Wright for the Bahrain Masters.
The PDC has chosen eight contenders to compete against eight stars from the Asian Circuit in Doha next week.
World Champion Luke Littler will participate in the event, along with world No. 1 Luke Humphries.
However, Van Gerwen will not be attending due to family obligations.
A PDC announcement revealed: “The newly crowned World Champion Littler and world number one Humphries will lead the 2025 Bahrain Darts Masters next week, as the 16-player roster is now complete.”
“Two-time World Champion Peter Wright has been included in the eight-player PDC lineup, as Van Gerwen cannot compete due to family responsibilities.”
World No. 12 Wright has been selected to step in for Van Gerwen, despite not having a particularly impressive tour this year.
Although Wright did not secure any titles, he did manage to beat Humphries on his path to the World Darts Championship quarter-finals.
Nonetheless, some fans argue that Wright doesn’t deserve this chance, insisting that Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker should have been selected instead, especially following his exclusion from the Premier League lineup.
One fan expressed: “What more must Mike De Decker do to gain recognition? Average 140? Hit three consecutive 9-darters? He’s a major winner and should be treated with more respect than Peter Wright receiving another opportunity…”

Another commenter noted: “Is that Peter Wright I’m seeing? In today’s era?”
A third added: “So De Decker is also not ready for the World Series? Surely he should be next in line after the Premier players?”
