This morning, authorities apprehended four individuals, including a grandson of former South African president Nelson Mandela, after a suspected hijacked vehicle was found at Mandela’s historic residence in Houghton.
The identity of the grandson is known to SurgeZirc SA but remains confidential until officially confirmed. He is one of the suspects linked to the hijacking that occurred last night in Benoni.

According to initial police reports, the stolen vehicle was brought to the Houghton residence while the original driver was still inside. While details concerning the driver’s current status are unclear, it is confirmed that he is now at an Ekurhuleni police station preparing to file a report.
A Deteriorating Home
The Houghton residence, which once symbolized Mandela’s legacy, has sadly been neglected in recent years, overshadowing the memory of the revered leader.
Reports suggest that the property has significantly deteriorated since Mandela’s grandchildren moved out after the City of Johannesburg cut off electricity due to unpaid municipal bills escalating from R15,000 to R50,000 each month.
Mbuso Mandela, one of Nelson Mandela’s grandchildren, has publicly criticized the trustees of the Nelson Mandela Trust, accusing them of neglecting the estate’s maintenance and failing to act in the family’s best interests.

“There is significant collusion happening between the trustees and the estate executor,” Mbuso commented. “It is well-known that trust board members receive stipends for managing the trust. I suspect they are cooperating to allow the house to remain unmaintained.”
Efforts to Maintain Mandela’s Legacy
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has recently pledged to restore the historic residence, recognizing its significance as a cornerstone of Mandela’s legacy. Additionally, philanthropist Collen Mashawana, through his foundation, has offered to fund renovations, marking a potential positive development in preserving this iconic home.

The four suspects apprehended at the residence, including Mandela’s grandson, are facing charges of hijacking and possession of a stolen vehicle. An unlicensed firearm was also found on-site, though police have yet to determine any connection to the crime.
This arrest brings to light serious concerns regarding security and the safeguarding of Mandela’s heritage, as the once-honored residence becomes entangled in controversy while efforts for restoration continue.
Authorities are carrying out an ongoing investigation, with more details expected to emerge in the following days.
