South Africa grieves the loss of one of its most beloved and resilient figures, Winnie Khumalo, who tragically passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the age of 51. Renowned for her remarkable contributions to music and television, Khumalo died at her home following a brief illness.

The heartbreaking news was relayed by her daughter, singer Rethabile Khumalo, who contacted media personality Sabelo “Ntombeningi” Sithole for help after finding her mother unresponsive.

Sithole, devastated by the news, shared: “I rushed to her home, but it was too late. I’m heartbroken—I have lost a dear friend.”

A Life Defined by Achievements and Struggles

Khumalo’s illustrious career spanned decades, beginning when she was discovered by the late Brenda Fassie as a teenager. At just 15, she released her debut album, Hey Laitie, Tshina Tshina, under the guidance of the esteemed music producer Sello Chicco Twala.

She collaborated with some of South Africa’s most recognized artists, such as Brothers of Peace (B.O.P.), Bongo Maffin, and DJ Cleo, before making a name for herself in acting with significant roles in popular television shows like Muvhango and Mponeng.

Despite battling health issues like diabetes, asthma, and a back surgery that temporarily confined her to a wheelchair, Khumalo exemplified resilience. She once said, “Many of my peers have passed on, but I wish to see my grandchildren grow old. I pray for a long life.”

The Lasting Impact of Winnie Khumalo

Beyond her musical achievements, Khumalo’s influence in the entertainment sector was recognized through multiple prestigious award nominations. Her album I Just Wanna Live My Life, released in 2008, marked a significant return and received accolades at both the Channel O Music Awards and the South African Music Awards (SAMAs).

Continuing her legacy, her daughter Rethabile Khumalo has embarked on her own career in music. Despite facing difficulties, including surviving an alleged poisoning incident in 2024, Rethabile has maintained her mother’s legacy of strength and artistry.
