Johannesburg – The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has detained a group of suspected criminals, aged between 26 and 38, and confiscated unlicensed firearms along with live ammunition in Daveyton, Benoni.
On Wednesday, (8 January 2025), around 09:30, officers from the EMPD’s Eastern Region Task Team apprehended four male suspects.
According to the City of Ekurhuleni, the arrests were prompted by a tip-off regarding a gang traveling in a white Toyota Avanza with forged registration plates.
This gang was reported to be causing concern among the residents of the Mina Nawe informal settlement.
The City stated, “The officers initiated a search and located the vehicle with four occupants, including the driver, at the intersection of Buffalo and Brazil Road in Mayfield.”
“During routine checks, it was discovered that the driver did not possess a valid driver’s license and the vehicle’s license disc was fake.”
“The officers then searched all occupants and the vehicle, uncovering two unlicensed 9mm firearms with their serial numbers removed, along with seven live rounds,” they further explained.

The suspects were then taken into custody and transported to the Putfontein Police Station.
“Further investigations are ongoing to determine if additional charges can be brought against the four individuals,” the City concluded.
