Los Angeles Addresses New Fire Amid Increasing Property Damage and Home Losses

The situation in Los Angeles is worsening as the firefight crosses into its third day, with a new wildfire emerging north of the 101 Freeway that is spreading rapidly and forcing more evacuations.

The Kenneth Fire ignited on Thursday afternoon in Hidden Hills, about 50 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. An evacuation alert intended for local residents was mistakenly sent out to 10 million people before being rescinded, leading to confusion and heightened anxiety.

Wildfires in Los Angeles have already resulted in at least seven deaths, displaced roughly 180,000 individuals, and reduced entire neighborhoods to ruins. AccuWeather estimates the economic repercussions could range from $135 billion to $150 billion, making it one of the most costly natural disasters in U.S. history.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has announced a planned 12-hour curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in areas under evacuation orders, as detailed by LA County Sheriff Robert Luna during a Thursday press conference. The hope is to implement this curfew starting tonight once legal processes are finalized.

Kristin Crowley, chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department, confirmed two fatalities from the extensive Palisades Fire, while the Eaton Fire has claimed five lives. Both fires remain uncontrolled.

However, there are glimmers of hope. The Eaton Fire, which poses a threat to Pasadena, has significantly slowed its spread when compared to the previous day. A smaller blaze in the Hollywood Hills was quickly contained, allowing residents in the vicinity to return home. Wind conditions that have exacerbated the fires this week are anticipated to weaken on Friday, giving firefighters a chance to gain control.

“While the threats are still significant, I remain optimistic that we are making progress,” stated Kathryn Barger, chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

The wildfires have devastated thousands of structures and scorched over 30,000 acres, with firefighters consistently responding to new outbreaks. Southern California Edison, part of Edison International, has reported that no fire authority has indicated its electrical facilities may have caused the Eaton Fire, though they have received directives to preserve evidence from insurance companies.

As the fires persist, the casualties continue to mount. JPMorgan Chase & Co has warned that losses for insurers could surpass $20 billion, doubling the bank’s earlier estimate from just one day ago. The Eaton Fire alone has caused damage to or destruction of over 5,000 buildings, officials reported on Thursday.

Life across a city of roughly 12 million people is being disrupted by the wildfires. Schools have closed, many roads remain blocked, and nearly 120,000 homes and businesses in LA County are still without power. Authorities have arrested 20 individuals for looting and burglary in evacuated zones.

Local news agencies have alerted viewers that their broadcasts may be interrupted as one fire approaches a mountaintop where their antennas are situated. Residents are worried about breathing air that is currently among the most polluted globally. Officials have advised residents near burn zones to boil their water before use to avoid contamination from ash and debris in reservoirs.

The Lakers have postponed their basketball game against the Charlotte Hornets, and the NFL is contemplating alternative plans for the scheduled game on Monday between the Los Angeles Rams and the Minnesota Vikings. Additionally, the LA Kings canceled their game on Wednesday.

The Palisades Fire, located at the city’s northwestern edge, is the largest, having consumed over 17,200 acres. The Eaton Fire has ravaged parts of Altadena, growing to 13,690 acres, while the Kenneth Fire has reached nearly 1,000 acres.

Sadly, there are no rain forecasts for Southern California for at least the next week, which means the dry conditions that have turned the region’s vegetation into kindling will continue. Forecasters predict another wind event may occur on Monday or Tuesday of next week, as noted by Allison Santorelli from the U.S. Weather Prediction Center.

“While we don’t anticipate it to be as intense as the current winds,” Santorelli commented, “any increase in wind is concerning.”
