Defender Zuko Mdunyelwa of Mamelodi Sundowns acknowledges the significant effort required to secure playing time with the Tshwane giants and is committed to making the most of every opportunity that arises.
Mdunyelwa, who transitioned to Sundowns from Chippa United in January of last year, has participated in just two league games this season, both under the previous coach, Manqoba Mngqithi.
The 25-year-old also played in the CAF Champions League match against Mbabane Swallows. However, since the appointment of Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso, Mdunyelwa has yet to appear in the matchday squad.
The former Chippa right-back shows great enthusiasm to take advantage of his chances when they present themselves. “There’s a process, and I have objectives to meet [to seize that opportunity],” Mdunyelwa remarked.
“The technical staff is supporting me in getting back into form. I’m just biding my time, and I’m hopeful that when my moment arrives, I will embrace it fully,” Mdunyelwa stated.
Mdunyelwa remained in South Africa while the team traveled to Congo for their Champions League fixture against AS Maniema Union at Stade des Martyrs on Saturday (15:00), in light of the absences of Bathusi Aubaas and Khuliso Mudau.
Currently, Sundowns sits in second place in Group B of the Champions League and leads the Betway Premiership.
Mdunyelwa is confident that the Brazilians will secure the top spot in the Champions League, while also recognizing that the league has just begun, given its lengthy duration.
“It’s still the early stages of the Champions League, but I am confident that we will come out on top,” Mdunyelwa noted.
“We are committed to giving our best, and we’ll take it from there. As far as the league is concerned, it’s like a marathon; being at the top is not the only goal.
“Although we are currently leading, our aim is to hold that position until the end of the season, even if it proves challenging. I believe we can approach it one game at a time until the season’s conclusion.”
