UPDATE: Nelson Mandela’s grandson was arrested but was released before his court appearance due to inadequate evidence.
Johannesburg – Individuals connected to the hijacking of an Uber driver faced charges at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court for robbing the driver and seizing his vehicle.
However, the grandson of Nelson Mandela, identified as the fifth suspect, did not show up in court as he was not charged with any offense.
The hijacking incident occurred in the affluent Houghton area, where Mandela’s residence is located.
The accused, whom the court has ordered to remain unidentified until they undergo an identity parade, are confronted with charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping, and assault.
The prosecution asserts that earlier this week on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, the suspects summoned an Uber ride but allegedly proceeded to rob the driver of the vehicle instead.
The driver alerted the tracking company, which subsequently notified the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit.
The unit successfully located the hijacked vehicle at a property in Houghton, previously owned by former President Nelson Mandela.
Upon their arrival at the location, officers arrested five individuals and retrieved the claimed stolen vehicle, along with its license plate and a firearm.
Additionally, the driver reportedly lost R800 in cash and R300 from his account.
“The fifth suspect was released due to a lack of evidence connecting him to the alleged crimes,” said Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng.
“The NPA will wait for the conclusion of ongoing investigations before determining whether to proceed with prosecution.”
The case has been adjourned until January 17, 2025, for further investigation and to possibly address a bail application.
