Polokwane – The Chuene Clinic in Thokgwaneng village, Limpopo, remains closed following the devastating incident in which two nurses were kidnapped during their night shift by armed assailants and subsequently harmed.
Recalling the horrific events of Friday, 10 January 2025, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) stated: “Two nurses on night duty were taken at gunpoint, assaulted, and raped at Chuene Clinic located in the Capricorn District.”
The nurses’ union further highlighted: “The assailants, who were heavily armed, infiltrated the Chuene Clinic, overpowering three security personnel and restraining them before abducting the two nurses.”
“This shocking incident occurred around 1:00 am while the nurses were fulfilling their night duties.”
“The perpetrators took the two nurses with them, only returning around 5:00 am.”
“Both nurses are now grappling with significant physical and psychological trauma.”
On Saturday, the Limpopo Department of Health informed the local community that the clinic would remain closed.
“Given the circumstances, we urge community members to seek medical assistance at the nearest clinics in the surrounding areas,” stated Neil Shikwambana, spokesperson for the Limpopo health department.
“We are committed to keeping you updated on the reopening of Chuene Clinic and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”
Shikwambana expressed deep sympathy for the clinic staff and the community.
“As we navigate this challenging time, let us unite to keep the two nurses and all clinic personnel in our thoughts and prayers,” remarked Shikwambana.
“By working together, we can foster a supportive environment for our healthcare professionals.”
Nonetheless, DENOSA has criticized the department for insufficient security measures at public health facilities in the province.
“We urge the Department of Health to improve security in health facilities by deploying skilled and armed security personnel, as well as installing cameras and other surveillance systems,” stated Jacob Molepo, DENOSA provincial secretary.
Molepo also called on the police handling the investigation of the distressing incident at the Chuene Clinic to “leave no stone unturned” in their pursuit of the offenders.
The nurses’ union has demanded that counseling services be provided to all staff at the clinic and that night shifts be suspended indefinitely.
“DENOSA wishes for a quick recovery for the affected nurses,” commented Molepo.
