Ensuring a Steady Jet Fuel Supply at O.R. Tambo Airport: Key Measures Implemented

Johannesburg – Fuel providers have implemented risk management strategies to guarantee an uninterrupted jet fuel supply to O.R. Tambo International Airport following a fire incident at their refinery.

The Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) reported that the Fuels Industry Association of South Africa has notified them that National Petroleum Refiners SA (NATREF) is undertaking measures to avert any disruption in the jet fuel supply.

The fire broke out on 4 January 2025.

The Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) impacted by the blaze is projected to resume operations by 21 February 2025.

In a statement released on Sunday, 12 January 2025, ACSA expressed its relief in confirming that it has ample reserves to ensure the availability of jet fuel at O.R. Tambo International Airport for up to eight days, extending until 20 January 2025.

Fuel suppliers are set to implement the following mitigation measures:

  • Scheduled Fuel Deliveries: A shipment of 17,000m³ of jet fuel is expected to arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport by Sunday, 12 January 2025.
  • Pipeline Injection: A planned injection of 31,000m³ from Durban is slated for 14 January 2025, with delivery to O.R. Tambo International Airport anticipated by 27 January 2025.
  • Increased Rail Deliveries: Priority is being given to rail deliveries from Durban and Matola (Mozambique), with additional capacity ready to satisfy the demand for heightened jet fuel volumes.
  • Alternative Fuel Sourcing: Jet fuel will be sourced from other airports, along with direct injections to NATREF.

“Immediate intervention and risk mitigation measures are critical to address the expected jet fuel shortfall at O.R. Tambo International Airport between 20 January and the anticipated delivery date of 27 January 2025,” stated ACSA.

The Fuel Industry Association of Southern Africa and NATREF are collaborating with industry partners, including ACSA, to develop solutions by Tuesday, 14 January 2025.

“The main goal is to ensure the continuous availability of jet fuel at O.R. Tambo International Airport,” ACSA indicated.

“Airlines, passengers, and all stakeholders can rest assured that all necessary actions are being taken to maintain normal airport operations and ensure a reliable and stable fuel supply.

“ACSA is committed to transparent communication and will keep a close watch on the situation.”

“We appreciate your understanding and cooperation,” ACSA concluded.
