Johannesburg – Social media personality Musa Khawula, aged 33, will remain in custody for at least another week after the Randburg District Court denied him bail.
Khawula attended court on Tuesday, 14 January 2025, where he faced multiple charges including crimen injuria, a breach of Section 19 of the Cyber Crimes Act 19 of 2020, as well as hate speech allegations.
The court has mandated that Khawula stays in detention until 21 January 2025, when a formal bail request will be reviewed.
He stands accused of posting derogatory comments on his popular social media account from 10 to 12 October 2024, allegedly aimed at harming or damaging the reputation of 44-year-old entrepreneur Zee Nxumalo.
The defendant was apprehended in Dundee, KwaZulu Natal, under an arrest warrant (J50).
“During the court proceedings, the state opposed bail due to the accused’s ongoing murder case from 2022 in Free State and an active warrant for reckless and negligent driving,” said Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the Gauteng Prosecuting Authority of South Africa.
“Moreover, Sergeant Mabunda’s investigation has revealed that the accused’s identity and residential details require verification to assist in preparing a thorough statement for the bail application.”
