
Authorities in Mpumalanga have initiated a manhunt following the tragic shooting of Lieutenant-Colonel Pieter Pretorius, a 59-year-old commander of the Vehicle Identification Unit in Ermelo, in what appears to be a targeted attack.
According to reports, Pretorius was en route to meet an informant when he was ambushed by an armed assailant. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed that the officer was killed while operating an official vehicle, which was later discovered riddled with bullet holes.

“After the shooting, the suspect reportedly fled the scene in a white sedan,” Ndubane said, adding that a specialized investigative team has been assembled to probe the murder and track down the perpetrators.

Police Commissioner Vows to Seek Justice
Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the acting provincial commissioner for Mpumalanga, has denounced the shooting, describing it as a direct attack on the state.
“This heinous act has robbed our community of a dedicated officer committed to ensuring their safety,” Mkhwanazi remarked. “We are optimistic that a breakthrough will occur soon, and those responsible will be located and brought to justice without delay.”

Mkhwanazi offered heartfelt condolences to Pretorius’ family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
