Marcel Koller, head coach of Al Ahly, emphasizes that their primary aim is to achieve victory against Orlando Pirates as they seek to top Group C during their CAF Champions League clash at Cairo International Stadium this Saturday (18:00).
Even though both teams have secured spots in the quarterfinals, the fight for supremacy is about to take place in what promises to be an exhilarating match, especially after their previous encounter ended in a goalless draw at Orlando Stadium.
Currently, Jose Riveiro’s squad leads the group with 11 points, where a draw would be enough to maintain their position. In contrast, the Egyptian giants sit second with 10 points and need a victory to surpass the Buccaneers.
Nevertheless, the Swiss manager recognizes that capturing all three points in Cairo against an unbeaten team in the group will be a significant challenge, even as he holds a positive perspective for his team.
“I am hopeful about our chances for a successful match, but I understand it will be a tough battle as the opponents have shown remarkable performance and are at the top of the group. They put up a solid fight on their home turf in the first leg,” Koller stated.
While staying vigilant about the challenges posed by the Sea Robbers, Koller asserts that their goal is to usurp the Pirates and assert their dominance in the group as they progress to the knockout rounds—an achievement they have only managed once in the last five campaigns.
“Our objective is to win and take the top position in the group, which is a difficult challenge. However, we are well-prepared, and our comprehensive squad is equipped to handle any absences,” remarked the two-time CAF Champions League champion.
The reigning African champions are looking forward to the return of key player Emam Ashour, who has netted six goals in his last three appearances, along with Wessam Abou Ali, who is recovering from minor injuries, as they seek to secure three consecutive continental titles.
“Even though we are contending with considerable injuries, the quality of our players offsets those who are unavailable, and anyone who steps onto the pitch has the chance to showcase their abilities. The match will not be easy for us, especially with younger or less experienced players,” Koller pointed out.
“It’s premature to discuss our championship prospects, but our current victories suggest we’re on a favorable path. We have claimed the title twice and are aiming for a third consecutive triumph, yet this doesn’t imply our opponents have fewer chances.”
The Soweto giants will draw motivation from their notable recent 4-3 victory during their last trip to Cairo. Historically, the Pirates have faced Al Ahly seven times, achieving two wins, three draws, and one loss.
