Orlando Pirates’ head coach, Jose Riveiro, has chosen not to reveal any information regarding winger Monnapule Saleng’s condition or the recovery timelines for long-term injured players like defender Olisa Ndah.
As the Soweto giants strive for success in various competitions, the absence of Saleng, whose reasons for being unavailable remain ambiguous, has sparked speculation within the South African football community, particularly since additional attacking options would be advantageous.
The 26-year-old forward last featured in December 2024 during a scoreless match against current African champions Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League at Orlando Stadium.
Saleng has been instrumental in Riveiro’s achievements at Pirates, aiding the team in securing five domestic cup titles since the Spaniard assumed the role in June 2022. When asked about player absences, the Bucs coach withheld details regarding any players, including those who are injured.
“I refrain from discussing my players’ health; it is a matter of privacy. The club will share information about injured players and their anticipated return when it is appropriate,” he stated.
The 49-year-old coach stressed that he would not be providing any updates, dashing the hopes of Bucs supporters eager to understand the circumstances surrounding Saleng’s condition.
“Offering such updates does not fall within my responsibilities as it isn’t ethical. I understand that it would be useful to know how close Olisa [Ndah] is to recovery, what the situation is with [Goodman] Mosele, or the status of Saleng, but that information will not be shared,” Riveiro expressed.
The Sea Robbers are gearing up to face Baroka FC in search of a quarterfinal position in the Nedbank Cup this Saturday, followed by a match against Golden Arrows at Mpumalanga Stadium on Wednesday, 19 February, for a Betway Premiership encounter.
