Grenada – St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine, situated in Grenada, West Indies, has proudly announced its formal recognition by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). This approval is valid for three years, set to expire in October 2027.
This designation allows SGU graduates from South Africa to return home and practice medicine, provided they successfully pass the required examination and submit the necessary documentation to the HPCSA.
The HPCSA regulates health professions in South Africa, overseeing areas such as education,
training, registration, professional conduct, and ethical standards, while ensuring Continuing
Professional Development (CPD) and adherence to healthcare regulations.
To safeguard the public and guide healthcare professionals, registration under the South African Health Professions Act, 56 of 1974, is mandatory for anyone practicing a health profession recognized by the HPCSA.
Marie-Claude Svaldi, Director of International Government Relations at SGU, expressed her excitement about the recognition on Tuesday, (4 March 2025), remarking: “This acknowledgment from the HPCSA underscores our dedication to equipping students with the vital knowledge and skills essential for a prosperous medical career.
“With a robust academic foundation and comprehensive clinical experience, our graduates are exceptionally well-prepared to meet healthcare challenges in South Africa and beyond.”
SGU is devoted to training future physicians through intense academic instruction and practical clinical experience.
The university offers a Four-Year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, as well as Five-, Six-, and Seven-Year MD tracks, making it accessible for students from diverse educational backgrounds to embark on a medical career.
The School of Medicine boasts an extensive network of over 75 affiliated hospitals and clinical sites throughout the United States and the United Kingdom, offering students invaluable training opportunities in various healthcare settings.
This experience allows them to acquire practical skills while broadening their perspective on patient care.
The HPCSA’s endorsement opens new avenues for South African students pursuing an international medical education, ensuring they can return to aid in strengthening the country’s healthcare system.
In line with its long-term commitment to supporting South African students, SGU aims to maintain its recognition through a timely renewal process beyond October 2027.
This ensures that future SGU graduates will continue to have the opportunity to return home and contribute to the enhancement of South Africa’s healthcare landscape.
