Moscow Metro Introduces Facial Recognition Technology for Fare Payments

Moscow – commuters utilizing the Metro Rail in Moscow, Russia, can now board trains using facial recognition technology, removing the need for cash, cards, or smartphones for fare payment.

“Moscow residents can enjoy unlimited travel on the Metro, MCC (Moscow Central Circle), MCD (Moscow Central Diameters), and regular river routes through facial recognition,” announced Maksim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry, on Monday, March 24, 2025.

“This feature is available through the MultiTransport service.

“There is no need for cards or smartphones to access the turnstiles.

“This highly convenient payment method ensures bank-level security, with all data encrypted.”

Liksutov highlighted that the incorporation of biometric payment systems with the MultiTransport service opens new possibilities for travelers.

“Muscovites can benefit from this payment option to enjoy seamless, integrated journeys, realizing savings of up to 30%,” Liksutov commented.

“We are integrating optimal payment solutions with bank-level security into our pricing structures, per the guidelines from Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.”
