Following an impressive streak of victories at the Rugby World Cup, showcasing remarkable teamwork, skillful performances, exhilarating tries, and immense happiness for fans of all backgrounds, the sponsorship partnership between MTN and the Springboks is set to conclude after a significant eight-year tenure.
The Springboks, having claimed the title of world champions, have won the Rugby World Cup four times in history, with two of those triumphs—2019 and 2023—taking place during the MTN collaboration.
Recently, Sportswire announced that MTN will not be renewing its sponsorship once it expires in June.
“This partnership has been incredibly rewarding and inspiring for MTN, especially as we became the lead sponsors during a challenging time for rugby in 2017, following the Boks’ difficulties since their last World Cup victory in 2007,” stated MTN SA CEO, Charles Molapisi.
“To us, it was more than mere branding; it was about fostering transformation by reconnecting rugby with the community and nurturing the spirit of Ubuntu. We exhibited our leadership and commitment to South African sport, and we couldn’t be prouder of the outcomes.

“We express our sincere gratitude to SA Rugby for their trust in us as the main sponsor for such an extended period. We take pride in our partnership, which has facilitated the game’s evolution and ushered in a golden era of triumph for both current and future generations.
“As we conclude this successful journey both on and off the field, where the game extended beyond iconic stadiums like Emirates Airline Park, Stade de France, and Twickenham to urban hubs, small towns, and rural areas needing growth, both MTN and the Springboks will embark on new chapters in their sponsorship trajectories.”
Mr. Mark Alexander, President of SA Rugby, expressed: “I want to extend my sincere thanks to MTN for their steadfast support during these past eight years.
“We reached out to corporate South Africa for partnerships during a tough time for rugby in our country, and MTN responded decisively. Together, we have experienced what will undeniably be regarded as a golden age for the sport.”
“The Springboks have visited MTN’s offices twice as newly crowned world champions, marking the peak of our partnership. MTN has supported us at every juncture—not just in our pursuit of rugby victories but also in highlighting the strength of South Africa’s diversity when we unite.
“MTN’s faith in us during those challenging times was truly uplifting. Indeed, without the unwavering support of our partners, rugby would have struggled. MTN was at the forefront of this endeavor, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”
Alongside SA Rugby, MTN played a key role in enhancing the global reputation of SA Rugby and ensuring its long-term sustainability.
“In addition to supporting professional rugby, MTN has committed R30 million towards grassroots rugby development across South Africa, and we will continue to be integral in nurturing the growth of rugby nationwide,” Molapisi added.
During its tenure as lead sponsor, MTN focused on expanding and motivating the fanbase to rally behind their team. MTN invested in fan engagement initiatives like BokSquad, the official Springbok supporters club, and the Bozza platform, bringing fans closer to their passion—and their team.
Molapisi remarked: “Our accomplishments would not have been feasible without the fans, and I wish to convey my gratitude to every Bok supporter across the nation—from young children in Dutywa cheering in the streets to families in vibrant cities and tranquil villages—for their extraordinary passion and loyalty. The Boks’ international successes are a reflection of their steadfast support.
“I firmly believe that rugby and its development are set for even greater strides, built on the strong foundation of transformative achievements, loyalty, support, and excellence demonstrated over the past eight years.”
As part of its renewed branding strategy, MTN is reevaluating its sponsorship approach to discover new opportunities that will promote progress for an even broader range of athletes throughout the country.
MTN remains dedicated to sport and development in South Africa, continuing to invest in football through its MTN8 sponsorship.
“We proudly wear the Bok jersey. The success of rugby symbolizes the unifying power of sport in our nation, inspiring its people and offering hope to millions. With ongoing backing from MTN and other corporations, combined with support from entities like SA Rugby, South Africa will continue to cultivate the champions of tomorrow,” concluded Molapisi.
