Johannesburg – Telkom Group CEO Serame Taukobong has championed the creation of a borderless fibre network ecosystem across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, linking all 14 member states from South Africa to Angola.
While speaking at the 45th Southern African Telecommunications Association (SATA) Annual Conference, Taukobong detailed Telkom’s ambitious plan for regional digital transformation as the company gears up to preside over SATA from 2025 to 2026.
“Our goal is clear: to establish SATA as the most vibrant, value-centric ICT regional organization, fostering a thriving information society for SADC,” Taukobong declared.
“To achieve this, we must take decisive steps – starting with an uninterrupted fibre network, a Tier 4 data center hub, and a One SADC Roaming Flat Tariff.”
Telkom’s 3-Pillar Strategy for SADC Digital Growth
- Borderless Fibre Network – Linking all 14 SADC nations to enhance high-speed internet access and boost economic collaboration.
- Tier 4 Data Centre Hub – Leveraging Openserve’s fibre network to build a regional digital infrastructure for secure and scalable cloud and data services.
- One SADC Roaming Flat Tariff – Eliminating cross-border communication barriers to facilitate trade, tourism, and regional unity.
Taukobong emphasized the necessity of collaboration, referencing the African proverb: “Better a close neighbour than a brother far away.”
He urged all stakeholders to unite in nurturing a digitally empowered SADC, especially as Africa Month approaches in May.
The Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, endorsed this vision, highlighting the importance of technology in bridging regional gaps.
“Under South Africa’s stewardship in the G20 Digital Economy, we must promote inclusive growth through connectivity,” Malatsi stated.
As Openserve prepares to assume the SATA Chairmanship, Telkom is dedicated to strengthening regional partnerships, fostering knowledge sharing, and advancing socio-economic development through ICT.
“This isn’t simply about infrastructure – it’s about unlocking Africa’s potential,” Taukobong concluded.
“Together, we will position SADC as a leader in the global digital arena.”
