
Kimberley – Officials have apprehended two men in Kimberley, Northern Cape, after a viral video surfaced on social media showing them resisting arrest and physically attacking a female police officer.
The video captures a shirtless suspect, who had been placed in a police vehicle, attempting to escape while another man joined him in assaulting the female constable.
The aggressive individual was detained during a routine police operation focused on crime prevention.
The incident in the central business district attracted a crowd of spectators, yet none intervened to support the female officer.
Fortunately, police backup arrived, enabling the officers to handcuff both attackers and escort them away, to the applause of onlookers.
The female constable sustained minor injuries and received medical care.
Moreover, she participated in counseling and debriefing sessions provided by the police’s employee health and wellness unit specialists.
Regarding the viral video on Monday, 6 October 2025, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, Northern Cape Commissioner of the South African Police Service, “strongly condemned the attack on a female constable while she was performing her crime prevention duties in the Kimberley CBD.”
Lieutenant General Otola further commented, “No one is above the law.
“Those who assault our officers will face the full brunt of the law.
“An attack on police officials represents a direct attack on the State.”
Police spokesperson Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien indicated that the detained suspects are facing various charges, including assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, obstructing justice, and malicious damage to property.
