Head Coach Hugo Broos of Bafana Bafana has commended defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi, urging him to explore European opportunities following a standout performance against Nigeria in Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Mbokazi excelled in his third outing for the national squad, having made his debut in June during a friendly and featured again against Lesotho last Friday.
“Mbokazi… this young talent must make his way to Europe; he’s only 19, yet his on-field presence mirrors that of an experienced player. It’s only his third cap for the national team, but his impact is extraordinary,” Broos remarked.
“We hope some players can transition to Europe; it would be a significant asset for South African football.”
Mbokazi excelled defensively, making critical interceptions and executing a crucial block on a shot from Ademola Lookman that could have seen the Super Eagles score. His outstanding performance earned him the man of the match title.

Reflecting on the game, Mbokazi credited the team’s success to their rigorous training and solid teamwork.
“Initially, I want to highlight that we prepared extensively for this match. The coaches emphasized the importance of striving for victory, and we were all motivated to achieve it together,” Mbokazi shared in a post-match interview with SABC Sport.
The former Amajita captain was thrilled with the outcome, underscoring the team’s enhanced prospects for World Cup qualification.
“Regarding today’s outcome, we’re pleased as it paves numerous paths for us to qualify for the World Cup,” he expressed.
“If we maintain this momentum, I genuinely believe we’ll secure qualification. This match was one we feared most, but we worked hard to gain at least a point, supporting each other to ensure they didn’t beat us, and we are proud of the draw.”
The young defender acknowledged the encouragement from his seasoned teammates, which bolstered his confidence against experienced opponents.
“Indeed, I encountered highly experienced players, but our national team comprises talented individuals who helped me play with assurance,” he elaborated.
“They advised me to retain my approach and not get sidetracked by external factors, which contributed to my performance. I owe special thanks to Siyabonga Ngezana and Teboho Mokoena for their backing whenever I made errors.”
Mbokazi is set to return to his club, Orlando Pirates, which will face Stellenbosch in the MTN8 Cup final at Mbombela Stadium this Saturday.
This marks Mbokazi’s second final with the Buccaneers, following their Nedbank Cup final clash against Kaizer Chiefs in May.
