
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has reported the unfortunate loss of five children in a minibus taxi accident in Pietermaritzburg.
This incident occurred on Thursday when a minibus taxi, carrying students, lost control and crashed into a classroom at a preschool in the Imbali area.

Police and emergency services quickly responded to the scene to provide assistance.
Multiple Schools Impacted
According to the KZN Department of Education, four students died at the scene, while a fifth child later succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital. Several other students sustained injuries in the incident.

Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi stated: “We have learned that a taxi carrying students from various schools, including Sukuma, hit a tree before crashing into a daycare center. At the scene, four learners lost their lives, and the fifth child died while being taken to the hospital.”

Officials confirmed that the victims were students from different regional schools.

Law enforcement, including police and traffic inspectors, were dispatched promptly after the incident. This tragic event followed closely after another student was struck and killed by a truck in the King Cetshwayo District in northern KZN.
The Department of Education, along with emergency services, is continuing the investigation and providing support to the affected families.
