Tottenham Chief Thomas Frank Advocates for Controversial Changes to Football Match Rules and Handball Regulations

THOMAS FRANK is advocating for the introduction of a timeout during each half of football, allowing coaches the opportunity to strategize with their players.

The Spurs manager believes that changes to the handball rule are essential to enhance fairness in the game.

Currently, managers can only communicate with their players from the sidelines during matches or at halftime.

Frank, 51, proposed: “I would implement a timeout in each half.”

“From a coaching standpoint, being able to engage with the players during the game would be invaluable for making adjustments.”

This suggestion signifies a significant change and is likely to be embraced by fellow coaches, as it would amplify their influence on team tactics.

However, it’s debatable whether fans would favor more interruptions during games, especially with the current VAR delays.

Frank is also steadfast in his view that the existing handball rule requires amendment for enhanced fairness.

In his comments to BetMGM, Tottenham’s official Front of Training Wear partner, he remarked: “I would eliminate the handball rule; it doesn’t make sense.”

“If a ball makes contact with a player’s arm in the penalty area, it gives the opponent a significant edge solely due to that contact.”

“If someone is on the goal line attempting to save the ball like a traditional goalkeeper, that’s a different scenario.”

“But I don’t comprehend how mere contact with a player’s arm can yield such a substantial advantage for the opposing team.”

SunSport’s Martin Lipton discusses Daniel Levy’s exit from Tottenham after 25 years as executive chairman.

“This is a rule that needs revision to enhance the game and promote fairness.”

Frank took over from Ange Postecoglou as Spurs manager this summer following a successful stint at Brentford.

He has made a commendable start in N17, challenging Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup and securing key Premier League victories against Burnley and Manchester City.

However, his advancement faced a setback with a disappointing 1-0 home loss to Bournemouth just before the international break.

Regardless, Frank stated: “Overall, the season has started well. I’m pleased with the players’ mentality since joining the club.”

“We’ve played three Premier League matches and one in the UEFA Super Cup, and I’ve been satisfied with three of those performances.”

“Our display against Bournemouth didn’t meet expectations, but considering our starting point, I’m content.”

Postecoglou, who recently assumed his role at Nottingham Forest, brought Tottenham their first trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League in May.

However, he faced the fallout from a record 22 league defeats, leaving Spurs in 17th place.

Now, Frank aims to achieve greater consistency across competitions, having acquired four experienced players: Mohammed Kudus, Joao Palhinha, Xavi Simons, and Kolo Muani.

With his team set to clash against West Ham on Saturday, Frank concluded: “The key to this season’s success is creating a sustainable and strong foundation.”

“I want us to consistently deliver our best performances in every match.”
